It was originally French Canadian and Irish, as opposed to English or Scottish Upper Town, which is no longer used. The current population is approximately 11,377 (2006 census). Many heritage-designated buildings can be found in the area, which maintains its historical routes. Lower Town is rich in both ethnic and cultural diversity, with New Canadians comprising half of the population.

Transportation: Getting Around Lower Town
Lower Town offers many ways to get around the city. There are numerous paths and bike paths that can be used to get around the city. There are also many OC Transpo bus routes which serve residential areas, including 1, 5, 7 and 9. In addition, access to many more bus routes are available at the Rideau Street transit station, a close walk away. These routes will take you to the key points in Ottawa and serve the many transfer hubs that allow access to other routes.
